New Zealand Day One March 22nd, 2016

We arrived in Auckland at 5:30 a.m. March 22nd after departing from home at 8:00 a.m. on March 20th. If any of our guests were celebrating a birthday on March 21st they missed it this year as we crossed the international date line and skipped Monday all together. New Zealand is 17 hours ahead of home.

Our first morning we toured around Auckland, exploring and photographing some of the urban landscape. Then mid morning took the ferry over to Devenport and claimed one of the small volcanic formations Mt Victoria for a panoramic view and photography of the region. A great way to regain our circulation after 23 hours of flying.

We have some time in the afternoon to relax then had a welcome dinner in our hotel for the group in the evening. Tomorrow we will spend time exploring more regions around Auckland. Another light day before we hit the road exploring the north island.

Here are a few images from our first day in New Zealand.

As you can see and confirmed by Ron .... We have arrived! A little reading while waiting for our luggage.

Morning coffee at a sea side cafe ... Gail wants to hit the beach!

Auckland skyline seen as we traveled by ferry to Devonport

Another view of the skyline. The Sky City tower is the tallest structure in the souther hemisphere, the clock tower building is the old ferry terminal.

Joan rounding the bend as we hike up Mt. Victoria today. Mt. Victoria is an 800 year old dormant volcano.

Ron hiking ahead to see what's around the corner.

Alexa and some of the others mastering the steep part of the climb.

Meg found herself some magic mushrooms.

Mt Victoria is the volcano you see in the middle of the map.

Auckland from the look out.

Joan and Don posing for a show with the city in the background. Welcome to New Zealand folks.

Ron and Alex with the city backdrop.

Gail, Ron and Meg, it was very windy at the top of Mt Victoria.

One final image today as we headed back to Auckland for dinner and sleep. More tomorrow.

Amazing James,
Not only am I in awe of the beautiful photographs, but I'm very impressed with your ability to download your images, post them and write a blog after what must have been an exhausting day and when I suspect that you may still be experiencing some jet lag. It's delightful to see you all having such a good time and my ability to share and enjoy this adventure with you, albeit, vicariously, is enhanced by seeing so many familiar faces. Please extend greetings to the "Trekkers" and know that I, and I think I can speak for many others, look forward to further posts.
