Still Images of a World in Motion Workshop
        with photographer B.D. Colen

6 Week Workshop - Oct 6th to Nov 10th, 2018 & Jan 12th to Feb 16th, 2019

Photo Tour Trekkers is pleased to offer a 6 week class on photography with photographer B.D. Colen on Documentary and Street Photography.

In this age of cell phone cameras and a constant flood of images, is anyone still a photographer, and what does it mean to be one?

And what role, does still photography (in general), traditional documentary photography, and photo journalism, play in our perception of the constantly moving, endlessly photographed, world around us?

Over the course of our 6 classes, you will be exposed to the work of a number of great documentary photographers, photojournalists, and street photographers, as well as to writing about the documentary tradition. We will be watching several outstanding documentary films, and you will work on a photo documentary project of your own. Attempting to reduce a tiny area of the moving world to a set of still images that convey what the viewer needs to know about what you saw all without hearing the sounds, smelling the odours, and experiencing what was happening outside the viewfinder, and without seeing any of the motion.

You may not have much experience photographing people you don’t know. In fact, that kind of photography may make you uncomfortable. One of the goals of this course is to get you to leave your comfort zone and experience a new kind of photography. Teaching you to capture the reality of the human experience in the world around you.

The class will meet for three hours on Saturdays. Classes will be comprised of discussions of issues, ideas, readings, group critiques and discussions on each of your photographic assignments.

Class enrolment will be limited to a maximum of 10 students. Allowing for sufficient review in class of your individual work. You will be expected to have your own digital photographic equipment. I strongly suggest that you have either a DSLR, or an interchangeable lens, mirrorless camera system. While you are not required to have highly sophisticated photo equipment, you must demonstrate at least basic proficiency with the equipment you already have. The more limited your equipment, the more limited your project possibilities.

The workshops will be held at the Airport Best Western on Dundas St. London, ON.

Course Outline and things to know ...

Over the 6 weeks of our classes you will be presented with a series of photography projects. Each of these assignments will help you with your Documentary and Street Photography.

Some of the assignments will include PAW - Photo-A-Week, Slide Mounts (this is a fun exercise), The real "Decisive Moment", Framing you image, and Space Ship. Several documentary projects such as Life in a restaurant, A day in a local laundromat, Faraway is not a place, Honesty and Life on a farm, just to name a few.

Your finished projects will consist of 20 images. The photographs should present the uninitiated with an understandable, engaging, "picture" of your subject.

We will also review and talk about a few readings about photography subjects that are related to our class topics.

B.D. Colen is a former Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for two of America’s leading newspaper, and has been photographing professionally since the age of 16. For the last 17 years he has taught a course in documentary photography and photojournalism at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which is recognized as one of the world’s top five universities. His work has been published everywhere from The Washington Post, Boston Globe, and Newsday, to the New England Journal of Medicine and Time Magazine.

The cost of our 6 week class is $199.00 plus HST
