Photo Tour Trekkers Weekend Photo Retreat - September 30 to October 2, 2022

Photo Tour Trekkers - Weekend Photo Retreat - A weekend of photography, workshops and fun - It's been a while since we had the opportunity to get together and we are pleased to invite you join us in Kincardine. Our event will be held along the harbour which will serve up many photo opportunities.

Our retreat event begins Friday with a 3:00 p.m. check-in followed by a photo wall. Friday evening our welcome event, the first preview of photo contest images ( more about the contest when you read on) and our first keynote speaker of the weekend photographer Richard Beland "30 Years on the Road" followed by a night photo shoot at the harbour. Guests will also have their first opportunity see the photo exhibit consisting of 30 images by Richard Beland and his Rock and Roll photo journey.

Saturday morning sunrise photo shoot followed the first of our weekend workshops, each session is 90 minute and you will be able to experience all the workshops over the weekend. More about our workshops below. Mid-day we will break for group lunch which is included which your fee followed by our afternoon workshop sessions. Saturday evening, we will gather for our evening group session and keynote presentation by George Kourounis also known as the Storm Chaser joining us during the Retreat Weekend, and will be our keynote speaker on Saturday evening presting "Master of Disater: Shooting Mother Nature's Tantrums". George is a renowned global adventurer, storm chaser, explorer and television presenter. Based in Toronto George works on document nature's worst weather conditions which has taken him all over the world in locations most people are fleeing. Whether it's a tornado in Kansas, a moster hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, forest fires in British Columbia, or even an erupting volcano, he's usullay in the mddle of the action with his camera rolling. His work have been seen around the world on the Dscovery Channel, National Geograpic Explorer, BBC-TV, CNN, and of course on his own advutre TV program Angry Planet which has been broadcast in over 100 countries. The program is on OLN, City TV, The Travel Channel, The weather Channel, Halogan TV and more. George started chasing tornadoes and other storms 20 years ago and his adventure continues as he expands his explorations into all types of extreme natura phenomena. We are please to have George speaking at our event.

This will also be your second opportunity to view the photo contest entries.

Sunday morning, we will host a photo shoot at Point Clark lighthouse followed by our morning series of workshop sessions. Once again mid-day we will meet for a group lunch and presentation by Johan Sörensen. Swedish born, Paris raised, Johan is a master of his craft.  He combines technical brilliance and innovative lighting to compose stunning images.  Internationally acclaimed and award winning fashion photographer with over 25 years experience.  His works have been featured throughout North America and Europe.

then our final afternoon workshop sessions.

At 3:00 p.m. we will meet for our group wrap up session and presentation to contest winners.

Photo Retreat Photography Contest

Included in your registration fee is a $5 entry fee into our Photo Retreat Photography Contest. There are three categories: Wildlife, Landscapes and People. Each registrant may enter 3 images. One in each category or any combination of categories totally three images. First prize in each category is $100 and Best in Show wins the grand prize of a tour with Photo Tour Trekkers to the Greek Islands in September of 2023. You will be emailed an entry ballot, instructions, contest rules and a link to upload your 3 entry images after your registration is completed and paid. Contest images will be displayed throughout the photo retreat venues and winners announced at the wrap up group session. Please note contest deadline September 25, 2022.

The cost for the weekend event is $249.00 plus tax.

We are proud to be partnering with Inn at the Harbour, check-in and start your weekend all our venues are at the hotel and within one block walking distance. The cost for accommodations for the two nights Friday and Saturday at The Inn at the Harbour is $380.00 plus tax based on double occupancy (twin or queen beds) a third guest in the room can be added for an additional $50.00 plus tax. ** Please note you can request accommodations at the Inn during the registration process, they will contact you directly to finalize.

Our Photo Retreat Weekend is limited to 50 guests - 4 spots available.

Keynote Presenters:

Richard Beland - Presentation "30 Years on the Road" 
Friday September 30th 7:30 p.m. during our fist general session
 

Richard will share his inspirational story of 30 years of being a music photographer. His extensive body of work which dates back to 1993 and includes live performance photographs as well as studio portraits. From photographs of Coldplay to those of The Tragically Hip, Richard's images of international stars and Canadian icons reveal his passion for his craft, his keen sense of composition, and his steadfast commitment to detail.

Over the years, Beland’s photographic contributions have been recognized with numerous awards and nominations, including a Juno Award nomination in 2004 for Album Design of the Year in Gord Downie’s album, Battle of the Nudes. Beland has also received the distinction of a Canadian Country Music Award for his work in Jason McCoy’s Greatest Hits CD, and a Canadian Country Music Award nomination for his photographs within Johnny Reid’s album Kickin’ Stones. Beland’s photographs have also made appearances in well-known publications, including Rolling Stone, SPIN, Mojo, Kerrang!, People, and MacLean’s.

Richard has just completed an exhibit at the Liss Gallery in Toronto and we are pleased that Richard will have on display 25 pieces from it exhibit during our photo retreat weekend.

Georges Presentation: Explorer & photographer George Kourounis shares hair-raising tales from his many worldwide expeditions to photograph storms, volcanoes and other natural disasters. He’ll also give you tips on how to use bad weather to your advantage, how to protect your gear, and how to stay safe in the worst conditions imaginable. Updated with new images and stories from even more global expeditions!

Johan is nationally accredited in fashion, figure study,glamour and studio portraiture by the Professional Photographers of Canada. This presentation will be inspiring and entertiaing.

Workshops: 

We are pleased to offer four workshops during the photo retreat weekend. Each registered guest will have opportunity during the weekend at attend each of the workshops offered in our program.

Break the Rules - In this thought-provoking session, we will examine serval "rules" of photography, looking at their benefits and drawbacks. Are the rules mandatory or merely suggestions? If you break them will the design police come and break down your door? We will look at photographs by acknowledge masters of photographer past and present that challenge, bend break and/or ignore the rules you've come to believe are sacred. Break the rules and free your creativity. Break the Rules workshop presented by B Das.

Black & White Photography - There is an art black and white photography both in what to look for when capturing the image and in post processing. During our time together we will look at different techniques and things to look for when taking a black and white photograph and also what do with it once you get the image in to your computer. We will explore post processing in Adobe Lightroom, and other commercially offered programs. This is a hands on workshop so if you have your laptop, you can try the techniques or if not in advance bring a few images on a memory stick and our instructor Leif with walk you thought the conversion steps on his computer. Our Black & White Photography workshop is presented by Leif Petersen.

Connect with your inner Photoshop - Over the past couple of years Adobe Photoshop and had numerous revisions and feature upgrades. During our workshop we will review and try some of the new upgrades and learn how the revisions can ease your workflow. We will also spend some time working on some post processing adjustments and a couple of photoshop projects geared to learning more about the program. This is a hands on workshop so please make sure you have your laptop computer with you for the class. Connect with your inner Photoshop is presented by James Cowie.

Our workshop presenters:

B Dass: Dass has been into photography since he was a child. In his early 20’s he worked for a portrait studio in Toronto and later for a commercial photographer. In 2008 Dass joined two camera clubs in the GTA region and became very active in the local photography scene. He is also the immediate past president the Toronto Focal Forum. In 2019 Dass co-hosted a photography tour of northern India, exploring the mystical land he knows so well. His humour and unique outlook will inspire you.

Leif Petersen: Leif is originally from northern Norway’s fabulous Lofoten Islands. He moved to Canada with his family in 1951 and had his first trip back to Norway 34 years later. Since then, he has returned to Norway 19 times, most often to Lofoten, and has led several photo tours to the islands over the past 7 years. His latest Norway tour as a Photo Tour Trekkers photography host photographer, he will be returning just two days before our retreat.

Leif has been involved in photography for over 30 years and his skills have been recognized in regional and national competitions and publications. He joined the Oshawa Camera Club in 2008, spent several seasons on the Executive Committee, including 2 terms as the President. He is the President of the Toronto Focal Forum, a group of avid photographers who print and evaluate their images. He enjoys his role as an ambassador for Panasonic Canada, which involves evaluating their equipment and promoting their technology. He is an Ontario Council of Camera Clubs (O3C) accredited judge and the newly elected council president.

Johan Sörensen Swedish born, Paris raised, Johan is a master of his craft.  He combines technical brilliance and innovative lighting to compose stunning images.  Internationally acclaimed and award winning fashion photographer with over 25 years experience.  His works have been featured throughout North America and Europe. Johan is also our Keynote presentor during our Saturday evening general session.

James Cowie: James is a third generation photographer with a passion for sharing the art of capturing images through adventure travel. Exploring unique destinations around the globe, he affords his guests wonderful photographic opportunities and interesting ways to learn more about photography. James has 40 years of experience in the photo industry, and coupled with his 18 years of travel skills, each guest will enjoy an enriching experience while expanding upon their photographic knowledge, skills and the art of observation. James also serves on the Advisory Board for the photography program at Lambton College, in Sarnia, Ontario. 

James is well versed in Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom and many other photo management programs, and works with both MAC and PC computers. His number one belief is to have fun with your camera. The more comfortable and relaxed you are when out on an adventure, the better your powers of observation, resulting in more exciting images. With James' knowledge of the areas being visited along with his sense of humour, and his skills as a professional photographer, you will find yourself seeing what is out there in a different light.
