Iceland Northern Lights Photo Tour - March 21st to 26th, 2022

Iceland Northern Lights Photo Tour - Referred to as the Land of Fire and Ice, the forces of nature have created a volatile playground of colour and beauty. Get ready to discover one of the most beautiful places on Earth. The shorter days of March combined with interesting locations and you have the beauty of the Northern Lights. Each evening we will be visiting locations known for capturing the Northern Lights.

One such location is is the Glacial Lagoon at Jokulsarion Lake. The glacial ice and the reflections of the lake will make for spectacular photography. We have selected our hotels so we will be close to regions we will are photographing.

I’m very excited about this photo tour and sharing it with all the photographers and guests that will be joining us on this journey.

Iceland Northern Lights Photo Tour Itinerary - March 21st to 26th, 2022

Welcoming fully vaccinated guests on all our tours.

Day One: Monday March 21st, 2022:  We will depart London mid afternoon traveling via motor coach to Pearson International Airport.  Our Iceland Air direct flight departs at 8:55 p.m. with an overnight flight landing in Keflavik International Airport Iceland early Monday morning.

Day Two: Tuesday March 22nd, 2022:  Early morning flight arrival to Keflavik International Airport. Meet and greet our coach and driver. We will start our Iceland experience with a tour of Reykjanes Peninsula but the first stop will be for coffee and breakfast in the village of Keflavík.

After breakfast our first photo stop will be at Gunnuhver thermal springs. Gunnuhver is close to the so-called “toe” of Reykjanes, not far from where Reykjanes lighthouse stands and the roaring waves hit the dramatic sea cliffs. A unique characteristic of the hot springs is that the groundwater here is 100% seawater, unlike other geothermal areas on the island. The colorful minerals in the ground provide vibrant hues, but danger is very real with ground temperatures over 300°C (570°F) so it is important to tread lightly and stick to the trails. Iceland´s largest mud pool resides at Gunnuhver; it is 20 meters (65 ft) wide of violently boiling earth. This is all part of the Reykjanes UNESCO Geopark, where you find the geothermal area Krysuvik, ‘The Bridge Between Continents‘ and the amazing Blue Lagoon. This morning will offer up many photo opportunities.

One of the highlights of today will be our visit to Seljalands waterfall where you can take a walk behind the waterfall. We continue our journey underneath the steep mountains where the world famous Eyjafjallajökull glacier is located which erupted in 2010. Our next stop will be at the community of Skógar and Skógarfoss waterfall. We proceed along the south shore through the community of Vík and onwards through the desert of Mýrdalssandur black sand plains and along the ancient Eldhraun, a large mass of lava.

From the village of Kirkjubaejarklaustur we drive through the great natural barrier, Skeiðársandur, a vast track of black sandy plain onwards to Skaftafell National Park.  Each night we will be staying in regions that make it perfect for photographing and viewing the Northern Lights weather permitting. Overnight and dinner at Hotel Skaftafell. (B) (D)

Day Three: Wednesday March 23rd, 2022: Breakfast, South Coast – National Park Skaftafell & Glacier lagoon, today is dedicated to National Park Skaftafell and the Glacier Lagoon, Jökulsárlón.

If time and weather permits we will take a hike to the waterfall, Svartifoss, and its beautiful basalt columns. From the National Park we head to the glacier outlet of Svínafellsjökull to get into closer contact with the glacier and hopefully a good view to Iceland’s highest peak, Hvannadalshnjúkur.

The tour continues further east towards the glacier lagoon, Jökulsárlón, on the Breiðamerkur sand plain. It’s ideal to walk beside the boarder of the lagoon to see various different shapes of icebergs. We will spend this evening after dark photographing at the glacier lagoon.  Overnight and dinner at Hotel Skaftafell (B) (D)

The tour continues to Reynishverfi where you can walk down to the ocean. From there we will head to Sólheimajökull glacier outlet from Mýrdalsjökull glacier. The glacier is covered with volcanic ash where you can watch the ice drip at the edge of the glacier tongue. We travel inland to the community of Flúðir where you can opt to take a swim in Iceland’s oldest swimming pool, located beside several hot springs. There is a small Geysir, which erupts regularly and can be watched from the pool. Overnight and dinner at Foss Hotel Hekla in Flúðir Area (B) (D)

Day Five: Friday March 25th, 2022: Breakfast, check-out.  South – Gullfoss Waterfall – Geothermal Area & National Park Þingvellir. Our day will start by heading to the two tier waterfall, Gullfoss. From there the tour continues to Geysir geothermal area, known for its spouting spring Geysir and Strokkur. We head to Thingvellir, National Park, where the ancient parliament Althingi was established in 930 AD. Tingvellir is geologically remarkable and the tectonic plate boundaries form a breath taking scenery. You will get time to walk into Almannagjá’s rift with its towering walls ( 150 km ). When in Reykjavík we will take a short city tour around the old town, before checking in at our hotel.
